Germany defeats Hungary |
The fifth World Cup tournament produced a record number of goals. Olympic gold medalists and unbeaten for four
years, favored Hungary won first round matches against Korea (9-0) and West Germany (8-3). But in the final in Berne, West Germany upset the
Hungary team 3-2, scoring 3 second-half goals.
The 501 was BMW's first post-war
automobile. Starting in 1954, BMW produced several 501 models, including the 501A, 501B, 501/3, and 501 V8. The BMW
502
was introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in 1954. The 502's 2.6 liter powerplant was the
world's first aluminum, standard production V-8 engine.

Brazil defeats Sweden |
Playing in their sixth consecutive
finals, Brazil defeated the host country of Sweden 5-2. Just Fontaine of
France scored 13 goals in the tournament, a record that still stands.
The
500 series cars
were still being produced in 1958 when 17 year-old Pelé was introduced to
the world stage. BMW's other models included
the
503, the
507, and one of
the most unusual cars ever made, the
Isetta. |

Brazil defeats Czechoslovakia |
Pelé was injured in the opening
round and four of the first-round games ended in 0-0 draws in the seventh
World Cup finals. Brazil went on to win the World Cup for a second time,
defeating Czechoslovakia.
The
500 series cars
were still being produced in 1958. The growing lineup included the New Class
1500, the Bertone-bodied
3200CS Coupe, and the
Isetta-inspired 600 and the 700
models.

Brazil defeats Italy |
In one of the best World Cup games ever
played, the favored German team lost to Italy in the semi-finals. With the
game 1-1 at the end of regulation play, 5 goals were scored in extra-time.
Brazil went on to defeat Italy 4-1 and claim their 3rd World Cup trophy.
The
New Class and
New Six models led the way for
BMW in 1970. Several New Class models were produced including the
1600-2/1602, the 1600 Cabriolet, the 1800, the 2000tii, the 2000tilux, the
2002ti, and making its introduction, the 2002,
the ultimate sports sedan. The New Six models 2500, 2800 and 2800CS were
produced in 1970. The first BMW Motorsport
project ultimately resulted in the famous CSL coupes known as the
Batmobiles. |

Germany defeats Holland |
Behind Gerd
Müller, Sepp Maier, Paul
Breitner and Franz Beckenbauer, Germany's ''dream team''
defeated Holland 2-1 in the World Cup final in the Olympic stadium in
Munich. Müller scored the winning goal with a header on a corner-kick. Müller
holds the World Cup record for most goals scored with 14 goals in two
World Cups.
Today's
5 Series was launched in 1972 and in
1974, BMW introduced the 518 in Europe, Australia and other markets using
the four-cylinder 1800cc engine. The New Class and New Six product line
continued to evolve. Hans-Joachim Stuck sets a new lap record at the
Nürburgring behind the wheel of a BMW 3.0 CSL, and
ABS is used for the first time in a
race car. |

Germany defeats Argentina |
Germany
played in a World Cup final for the third time in succession, and with its
victory over Argentina, joined Brazil and Italy as the only countries to
win the World Cup three times. Argentina was led by Diego Armando Maradona,
one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
Today's
3 Series,
5 Series and
7 Series models were in full swing,
with the E30, the
E34, and the
E32 respectively. The 3 Series
E30 M3 featured a high-performance 4-cylinder, a direct
descendent of the M10 Formula One racing engine. |

Brazil defeats Italy |
Brazil defeated Italy at the Rose Bowl in
Pasadena, California, when Roberto Baggio missed his penalty-kick after a
scoreless match. In one of the saddest incidents in World Cup history
Columbia's Andres Escobar, the unlucky scorer of an own goal, was shot
dead when he returned to his home country.
The
3 Series and
7 Series models evolved with the
E36 and E38
respectively, while the 8 Series
coupes replaced the 6 Series. |
