Laughing all the way.

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way.

Bells on bobtail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight! Oh!

bells

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot,
We ran into a drifted bank
And there we got upsot.

bells

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!

Now the ground is white,
Go it while you're young,
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song.
Just bet a bob-tailed bay,
Two-forty as his speed,
Then hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! You'll take the lead.

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride

by James Pierpont

Although "Jingle Bells" is synonymous with Christmas, James Pierpoint wrote the song for a Thanksgiving program in 1857 at the Boston Church where he taught Sunday school. He titled the song, "The One Horse Open Sleigh," and made the rhythm so jaunty and the words so catchy that his 40 little Sunday schoolers learned it instantly. In admiring the song, a friend of the Pierponts called it a "merry little jingle" and helped give the tune the name by which we know it today.
The children's first performance was such a success that they were asked to repeat it at Christmas time, whereupon the sleigh apparently took on the identity of Santa's sled, and "Jingle Bells" became a Christmas song forever.
