A Better Seat |
Have you ever wiggled in your seat on a long trip? Have you ever wanted to stop and stretch your legs because you were uncomfortable? Have you ever felt
discomfort in your lower back while driving?
Long periods of driving put a strain on your back. According to medical studies, even sitting an average of 2 hours a day in a car raises the risk of a slipped disc. For men who
spend more than 50% of their workday in a car, the risk goes up 3-fold.
|
 |
Of course, you should always take rest breaks that allow you to stand up and move around to avoid fatigue and minimize postural discomfort. |
While seat accessories like fleece covers, armrests, and lumbar supports may improve your seat comfort, none of these measures removes the cause of back trouble from driving - the
lack of movement of the back.
BMW's Active Comfort Seat has been designed to keep you more alert on long trips where typically there is not a lot of opportunity to move around. The Active Comfort Seat can
also help you maintain a healthy back, especially if you spend long periods of time in your car.

Here's how it works: |
The Active Comfort Seat uses a sophisticated
system of motors and hydraulic chambers to move the seat up and down by 15 mm in a programmed fashion every 60 seconds.
 |
|
The seat base contains two hollow containers filled with an ecologically safe liquid. These containers are alternately filled and emptied hydraulically to cause a raising and
lowering of the right and left sides.
Over the 60-second cycle the Active Comfort Seat imparts a gentle rocking movement of the pelvis. The movement is almost imperceptible. |
| |
The movement keeps the spine in motion, exercises support muscles, improves blood circulation and helps avoid tenseness, fatigue and backache.
On 7 Series E38 models, the Active Comfort Seat is activated by operating a switch on the center console. The switch has an icon of a stylized seat
with a spinal curve above the seat pan. On 7 Series E65 models, the Active Comfort Seat can be enabled and disabled using iDrive.
