Undisguised: BMW Z8!
|
 |
Information |
We've seen various versions of BMW's swoopy Z8, which first appeared as
the Z07 concept car at the Tokyo auto show in 1997. A number of disguised
mules have been spotted on test runs, but a Canadian reader vacationing in
Jamaica happened across this showroom-ready Z8 being used in an
advertising photo shoot. (What, BMW didn't suspect vacationers in Jamaica
might have a camera with them?) What we learn here is that more chrome is
being used than was previously suspected, adding to the roadster's retro
sensation. Beneath the skin, though, it's anything but retro; we reported
earlier that it would be powered by the M5's 400-hp, 5.0-liter V-8, have a
sophisticated six-speed transmission, and go on sale by spring 2000. Even
at its $100,000-plus price, the limited-edition nature of the Z8 will also
make it scarce at U.S. dealerships, especially after it appears as James
Bond's chariot of choice in the upcoming 007 film, The World Is Not
Enough, scheduled for release in November. It's the third Bond film with a
BMW in it; the Z3 was launched in Golden Eye, and the 750iL sedan and
R1200C motorcycle appeared in Tomorrow Never Dies.
