Wash the car so it is free of dirt and contaminants. Run your fingers over the hood and roof. Does the surface feel smooth? Can you feel tiny bumps? If you feel rough grit or tree sap, you should first remove the grit, bug stains, water spots, etc. You can use paint cleaning clay or a specially formulated cleaner. If you use a cleaner, make sure it is safe for clear coat, since many BMW's have clear coat finishes. The clay will remove contaminants and it won't strip off the wax on your paint.

Once the car is completely clean, dry and free of contaminants, you can apply the wax. The wax can be applied by hand or with a buffer.
