In 1927 the aircraft factory at Eisenach, having produced cars since 1899, took over manufacture under license of the English mini-car, the Austin "Seven." The first German model (DA 1) turned into a
bestseller as the Dixi 3/15.
The BMW Dixi DA 1, built through July 1929, was later modified, an important improvement being the four-wheel foot brake. The front brakes on the Dixi had only served as parking brakes. In addition
the car received larger-dimensioned bodies. There were open two-seaters, four-seat touring cars, a two-door sedan, a coupe, both a two- and a four-seat convertible and finally a delivery van for 770 lbs. of cargo.
The DA 2 rapid delivery van was a variation of the vehicle mentioned above. They varied by their differing bodies. 435 rapid delivery vans were built between 1929 and 1932.
From July 1929 to July 1931 the vehicle was called the BMW 3/15 DA 2. From then to July 1932 it was called the DA 4. The designation DA 3 was reserved for
the roadster with the name "Wartburg," of
which 150 were produced during 1930 and 1931.
