16-hp Motorcycle to
1400-hp Formula 1
Technical achievements developed by BMW have been used in nearly all classes of motorsport - on two, three and four wheels; on land, water and in the air - with outstanding success.
 |
Aviation pioneer Zeno Diemer set the first record for BMW in 1919 when he climbed to 32,013 feet in a plane powered by a BMW IIIa high-altitude engine.
And more records soon followed. In 1926 a BMW-powered Dornier
aircraft set eight world records, and just one year later,
BMW test engineer Rudolf Schleicher won the six-day gold
medal in Great Britain.

For BMW, records have never been an end, only a means of proving that technical achievements work. For example, a race-bred BMW radial engine allowed the first airmail flight from Berlin to Santiago
de Chile. And when BMW expanded to record-setting motorcycles in the '20s, it actually laid a foundation for automotive technology to follow.
