BMW 328 roadster by Touring
|
|
In 1940, three
328 roadsters were sent to Milanese coachbuilder Touring, having them build aluminum roadster bodies for these chassis. The aerodynamic panels were molded out of Duralumin and layered on
a tubular light-alloy frame. Every attempt was made to make the cars both aerodynamic and ultra-lightweight. Total weight of the car is 644 kg. The rear wheel spats, absence of doorhandles, aluminum wheel rims, and Elektron-alloy framed
driver's seat are all part of the car's objective. Touring's own drag coefficient figure was just 0.25. The 6-cylinder, 1971 cc engine is a modified 328 roadster unit producing 120 horsepower, versus the standard 80 horsepower. With this engine and the aerodynamic lightweight body, this car's top
speed is about 130 mile per hour.
The three NSKK cars were built for the 1941 Mille Miglia, which never happened - the war causing its cancellation. The three cars then seem to have disappeared. One was reported to have gone to the
United States in the fifties, but that car has never been found. No record exists for a second car. The third car is in the BMW collection in Munich.
Although these cars never turned a wheel in anger and its history since WW II is somewhat unclear, its heritage as a special BMW is unquestioned.
