Beginning with the 1936 season, the BMW 328 ruled the events in the 2-liter s ports car class. For the running of the Mille Miglia in April of 1940, the legendary long-distance race over nearly 1,000
miles of Italian highway between Brescia and Rome, the BMW racing department in Munich under its head engineer, Rudolf Schleicher, undertook major modifications for the first time.
For the 1940 season more new race cars were produced for factory use. Performance was once more increased to 135 hp from 1971 cc, a sensational value for this time period. And the new roadster
chassis, produced in Munich this time, turned out to be correspondingly advanced. In the type of construction known as "Superleggera" which Touring created, 3 light aluminum chassis were fashioned from ultra-light pipe lattice construction.
The lines of the three roadsters were similar to the light alloy factory coupe, which was developed parallel to the Touring coupe in Munich. The team prize for victory in all classes went to the special 328 models in the 1940 Mille
Miglia.
