Muffling sound is what your BMW Muffler is all about. And keeping things quiet is actually the easy part. Keeping things quiet while not strangling your engine is a whole other matter entirely. There’s a lot of work that goes into the design of a performance muffler like your BMW muffler. Acoustical design has to meet up with fluid dynamics (don’t forget, exhaust gasses are technically a fluid), and it all has to be packaged successfully by metallurgists and automotive engineers.
It’s when the accountants get hold of your BMW muffler design that the problems start. They specify things like mild steel instead of stainless steel in the construction, which is great except that it rusts in about six minutes. Of course, when your stock BMW muffler rusts out, you get to install a high-performance stainless-steel BMW muffler, so maybe those accountants are doing you a favor after all.
