If you want to get rid of your radiator in a hurry, drive with a broken BMW Motor Mount. We’ve seen it happen before, and it’s not pretty: A broken BMW motor mount lets the engine creep up just far enough that the fan shreds the radiator—and itself, of course. There’s not much clearance up there if you look closely, so the integrity of your motor mounts is essential. Since they’re made of rubber, any time you have a BMW motor mount more than ten years old, it should be considered suspect.
Many replacement motor mounts have a neat little feature built in to them that prevents the above scenario from taking place. The two halves of the new BMW motor mount are separated by a rubber buffer, but they have locking tabs that hold the engine in place if the rubber gives way. If your car doesn’t have these locking BMW motor mounts, make sure you get them when replacement time comes along.
