BMW engineers were never fans of the mechanical fuel pump. They’ve been using high-pressure electric BMW Fuel Pumps for decades now due to the reliability and stability of the design. Whether it’s mounted in the fuel tank or along the frame, the BMW fuel pump has the all-important job of delivering gasoline to the engine in sufficient quantity and at sufficient pressure. We say “sufficient” since the fuel pressure regulator intervenes and ensures that the fuel is delivered at the correct pressure. The BMW fuel pump just has to provide the brute force.
Electric fuel pumps get hot while they work, and your BMW fuel pump is no exception. That’s why they’re generally cooled down by the fuel that they pump. Gasoline conducts heat readily, as you know if you’ve ever gotten vapor lock. So the BMW fuel pump sends its excess heat into the gas, which then cools off on its way to the engine. It’s simple, ingenious, and necessary: It’s your BMW fuel pump.
