It’s often neglected, and when it is it can cause all sorts of drivability problems. It’s your BMW Fuel Filter, and not surprisingly, it’s responsible for filtering all the nasty crud out of your gasoline before it gets to the expensive parts of your fuel system. Since 99.9% of the BMWs on the road are fuel injected, it’s essential to keep the fuel filter changed regularly. Tiny bits of dirt can wreak havoc on a fuel injection system, and your BMW fuel filter is the only thing keeping that dirt out.
Since fuel injection systems also rely on high pressure, if the fuel filter itself gets clogged, your car can’t get the quantities of pressurized fuel it needs to run properly. Sluggish performance, backfiring, and hesitation result, leading to speculation about all sorts of things that “might” be wrong with the car. Try replacing the BMW fuel filter before you do anything else. You’d be surprised at how many complex problems can be traced back to this one simple part.
