Born in the USA
|
Following the success of cars like the Mazda Miata, BMW predicted a vibrant market for a roadster model, and designed the Z3. First introduced in late 1995 and launched in the James
Bond movie Golden Eye, the Z3 was the first BMW to be built in the USA.
BMW's new plant just outside Spartanburg, South Carolina is the only source of Z3's for export to over 100 markets around the world.
In creating the Z3, BMW used design elements of the 50's BMW 507 roadster. The designers gave the Z3 a plush interior, better equipment options and a more
powerful engine.
 |
The real popularity of the car came from the James Bond movie Golden Eye.
The Z3 got lots of press from the controversy of James Bond, a British agent, driving a German car.

The original engine (for the USA) was a 138-horsepower, 16-valve 1.9-liter four cylinder. Considered underpowered, the 1.9 gave way to a 2.3
liter within a year.
In 1997, more power came in the form of an optional 2.8-liter six-in-line in place of the 1.9-liter four. The six-cylinder model also got a 2.5-inch-wider rear track, and the rear fenders were
flared.
In 1998, BMW introduced the Z3 coupe and the M roadster with the gutsy 240-hp, 3.2-liter engine. Later that year came the coupe versions of
the 2.8 and M models.
In 2001, the 2.3 was upgraded to a 2.5
liter engine, and the 2.8 has been replaced by an all new 3.0 liter.
