BMW
World's picks |
|
|
|
Having
reviewed the new BMW product line, we offer our picks of the best of the new
models.
|
|
Already destined
to be a legend like the 328, 507 and
M1, the Z8 is in a class by itself. Cars
like these only seem to come around every 20 years or so. We wonder how many of
these remarkable machines BMW will build. Be one of the lucky few! Can't afford
one? Remember, in the 1950's people couldn't afford the 507 either!

With
the six-cylinder, intercooled common-rail engine from the 530d, the 330d
has 184 hp and a top speed of 129 mph, yet it gets nearly 50 miles per
gallon. Too bad for the Americans, the ultimate commuter car isn't
imported into the USA. |

 |
The new M3 coupe is one of the most highly anticipated BMW models ever. Following the success of the two prior generations of M3 3-series models, the new
2001 M3 sets new standards of handling and performance.
You may have to wait in line to get your hands on one, but it is worth
the wait. |
|
|
Yes,
we know the other X5 has a 4.4 liter V-8 engine, but the new
M54 3.0
liter may be the most advanced six cylinder engine ever built. And the
X5 is popularly priced, paving the way for ease of entry into a crowded
market. The consumer wins! |

Got
stuff? Then you need something to haul it around, and what better than a
BMW sport wagon, what the rest of the world calls the Touring model. Go
for the all-wheel drive option - $10K of engineering for less than $2K. |
|
|
We
struggled with this one, for how can anyone overlook the 400 hp
M5? We
opted for the 540i instead because you can actually buy this model, not
just dream about it or wait for one to pop up on e-Bay. Add the optional
Sport Package and you now own the ultimate sleeper. |

7 Series
750iL
Protection |
|
 |
We
just had to include a 7 Series and a V-12 engine model, and the 750hL is
not in production yet. Unfortunately,
you may not need the protection model, but until BMW builds the
Rolls-Royce, this may be the ultimate celebrity machine. |
Honorable
Mention: The styling of the Z3 gets better and better all the time,
especially the coupes. And is BMW the only manufacturer who knows how to build a
convertible? |
