BMW presents the first German
twelve-cylinder automobile
engine in half a century when it unveils the 750i and
750iL. With a capacity of 5,379 cc, its engine initially produces 300 hp,
but later increases this to 326 hp and 490 Nm torque.
New technology:
BMW develops an electronic diesel injection system, and implements
on-board diagnostics in models of all series.
With the
M3 driven by Roberto
Ravaglia, BMW wins the only
World Touring Car Championship that has ever been held.
19-year-old
West German pilot
Mathias Rust evades Soviet air defense and lands a private plane on
Red Square in
Moscow. He is immediately detained and will later be released on
August 3,
1988.

Andy Warhol, artist, director, writer, dies on
