BMW incorporates diesel engines for cars
in its range and introduces the "eta" engine (the Greek letter eta stands
for the engine's efficiency) used in the BMW 325e and BMW 528e models.
BMW responded to the challenge of the
oil crisis with thriftier engines: the low-rev eta engine and the
turbocharged diesel engine. Work starts in 1975 on a diesel engine which
will combine low fuel consumption with unbeatable performance and smooth
running. The year 1983 sees the eta engine and environmentally friendly
BMW turbo diesel 524td both go into large-scale production; diesel
engines debut in the 3 Series in 1985.

lead-free petrol in Europe.
