E23

The E23 was introduced in May 1977 and was BMW's replacement for the E3 2500-3.3Li New Six models.


 

The 6 Series was born in 1976 with the introduction of the E24.

BMW 6 Series

The successor to the E9 3.0CSi coupe, the 6 Series E24 sport coupes were produced starting in March 1976.


 

The 3 Series was born in 1975 with the introduction of the E21.

E21

The 320i with the M10 engine was offered as a premium E21 model. Its 1990cc M10 had K-Jetronic injection and developed 129 hp.


 

Launched in 1972 with the 520i, the 5 Series was expanded for 1980.

In 1974, BMW introduced the 518 in Europe, Australia and other markets using the four-cylinder 1800cc engine. In the USA, six cylinder engines were used for the 530 (carbureted) and 530i (injected) models.

ABS goes into production.

The creation of the Formula One engine begins with the beginning of development work on the BMW M12/13 Formula One turbine engine. Used for the first time in 1982, this engine is used in the Brabham BMW BT52 and helps Nelson Piquet power his way to the Formula One world title in 1983. By 1987, BMW will have won nine Grand Prix races with this turbine engine.

BMW motorcycles win the Paris to Dakar Rally.

Ronald Reagan defeats Jimmy Carter in the U.S. presidential election.

1980 films include such titles as Ordinary People, Coal Miner's Daughter, The Elephant Man, Raging Bull, The Blues Brothers, Caddyshack and The Empire Strikes Back.

On December 8 former Beatle John Lennon is shot and killed in New York City.
