 Overview

Following the success of the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), BMW has expanded its X-family. First stop was the launch of the dynamic and versatile BMW X3 SAV at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of 2003.

The new BMW X3 combines the outstanding agility of a BMW road car with the wide range of practical features offered by a Sports Activity Vehicle. The X3 is the first premium model in the SAV segment beneath the X5.

The BMW X3 combines the characteristic proportions of a Sports Activity Vehicle with both classic and innovative BMW design features. The modern design language with convex and concave surfaces gives the X3 a youthful and fresh look.

Powertrain

 Powertrain

BMW's 3.0-litre straight-six gasoline and diesel power units ensure dynamic performance. Delivering 231 hp, the agile X3 3.0i reaches a top speed of up to 210 km/hour. A Sports Package will also be available with a high-speed set-up providing a top speed of 224 km/hour.

The BMW X3 will initially be offered with these engines, all straight sixes:

  • 2.5-liter 6-cylinder with 195 hp.
  • 3.0-liter 6-cylinder with 231 hp.
  • 204 hp diesel (in select markets).

The BMW X3 will be offered later with a 170 hp 2.2-liter six and 2.0-liter 143 hp gasoline and 150 hp diesel four cylinder motors in select markets. BMW's diesel engines are turbodiesels with second-generation common-rail direct fuel-injection.

Six-speed manual gearboxes are standard on all engines with a five-speed automatic transmission optional.

xDrive

 xDrive

A special highlight of the BMW X3 is the all-new intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology allowing adjustable and fully variable 100% distribution of power from the rear to the front of the vehicle. xDrive immediately recognizes any need for change in power distribution and responds quickly to ensure that the wheels don't loose their grip.

As a result, the X3 is able to feed optimum torque to the respective axle at any time during dynamic cornering, significantly minimizing both under- and oversteer in the process, adding a major safety factor to the performance of the car.

With the X3, BMW introduces its patented xDrive intelligent four-wheel-drive system. xDrive will set a new benchmark in agility for all-wheel-drive systems. xDrive works by instantly changing torque distribution – nominally 35% front, 65% rear – from front to rear axles for substantial improvements in stability, driving pleasure and safety.

xDrive is both fully adjustable and infinitely variable. This means the system feeds optimum torque to the required axle at any time while cornering, countering understeer and oversteer.

  • Off-road, xDrive significantly improves traction by distributing drive forces to the axle with the most grip. As soon as wheel spin threatens, the electro-hydraulic center coupling transfers power to the axle with greater traction.
  • On the road, xDrive offers a significantly higher standard of agility, driving pleasure and safety all in one. xDrive also ensures better grip and traction on slippery or rough terrain.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) complements xDrive, but intervenes far later and is required less frequently. While xDrive helps prevent loss of traction by channeling drive forces axle-to-axle, DSC works on individual wheels, intervening when one starts to slip. In these cases, DSC cuts power to the affected wheel and, where necessary, also applies the brakes.

In addition to xDrive and DSC, the X3 (like the X5) will also have Hill Descent Control (HDC) to limit down-hill speed when descending steep hills.

Design

 Appearance

This superior versatility of the new BMW X3 is also evident in the interior and wide range of equipment. The new X3 SAV enjoys a modern and spacious interior, and the typical elegant and aesthetic BMW looks are combined with a wide range of sporty and practical details.

In outward appearance, the BMW X3 has the looks of the larger BMW X5 with the surfaces of the Z4. Concave and convex surfaces abound and the X3 has a re-designed double kidney grille to complement the distinctive headlamps. At the rear, the car also sports a new twist on BMW tail lamps.

Inside the X3, the dash design shows a number of similarities to the BMW Z4. Like the X5, the BMW X3 lacks the high-tech iDrive controller used in the 7 Series and 5 Series models.

Safety

 Miscellaneous

BMW has numerous active and passive safety features in the X3. For example, the front drive shaft passes through the oil sump in order to give the X3 a low center of gravity and further reduce body roll.

Production has been contracted by BMW to Magna Steyr in Austria. Output is expected to be 60,000 units a year.
