If you have ever toured a lonely road in an open air vehicle, then you know the appeal of the Mille Miglia.
The 2004 Mille
Miglia witnessed an exceptionally successful team fielded by BMW
Group Mobile Tradition: Giuliano Cané partnered by his wife Lucia
Galliani won the Mille Miglia Storico for the eighth time. Six of
their triumphs were claimed with classics from BMW Group Mobile
Tradition.

This year also saw a
historically unique achievement: the triumphant BMW 328 Mille Miglia
Coupé was the first car to cross the finish line in Brescia as
overall winner after a previous victory in the classic Mille Miglia.
Back in 1940, Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer had
shared the wheel of this one-off model with bodywork by Touring to
win the historic 1,000-mile rally.

Like last year, the
Ladies' Trophy went to Franca Boni and Monica Barziza, who took
their ninth win. This time they were driving a BMW 328.

These wins were
complemented by success in the manufacturers' classification: thanks
to the outstanding placings of the private BMW teams and BMW Group
Mobile Tradition, BMW was also the most successful marque.

The fatal accident
of American participant Harlan Schwartz at the wheel of an Alfa
Romeo 8C2300 cast a shadow over this year's Mille Miglia. In
deference to this tragic incident, the organizers decided to cancel
the final trials on Saturday.

"When I talk about the Mille Miglia, I feel quite moved, for it played such a big part in my life. I knew it as a driver, a team director and a constructor ... and was always an
admirer of its champions. In fact, the Mille Miglia not only provided enormous technical advances during its three decades, it really did breed champions."
