The 3.0S was the first 3-liter New Six model, introduced in Europe in 1971.
The engine was a bored out 2.8 liter with a 1985cc, 180hp powerplant.
The 3.0S had twin Zenith 35/40 INAT carburetors, while the 3.0Si featured a Bosch L-Jetronic fuel-injection system.
The first 3.0S appeared in the USA in 1974, 3 years after its introduction.
The fuel-injected version of the 3.0S was the 3.0Si, along with the Bavaria, one of the most popular of the New Six sedans.

The American press was lavish in their praise of the 3.0S and 3.0Si models of the early '70s.
- Car and Driver, Road and Track and even Motor Trend reported favorably on the New Sixes.
- In a November 1973 review, Motor Trend called the 3.0S "the best value on the market".

BMW followed-up on these favorable reviews with a spirited series of ads. The caption for the THREE POINT ZERO "S" ad read:
Introducing the brilliant new BMW 3.0 S. It brings you all the advanced engineering you expect in a BMW, plus every luxury feature you could possibly want.
