The European versions of the Bavaria were produced in Europe only from 1974 to 1977. Fresh from the success of the
New Class, these long wheelbase models were BMW's challenge to Mercedes.
The wheelbase, track and overall length of the cars were greater than the 2800 and the Bavaria models.
The extra 3.9 inches in the wheelbase allowed more room in the rear seats. The spacious rear seats could be outfitted with leather upholstery. Leather was standard on the 3.0 and
3.3 and optional on the 2.8. A pull-down center armrest and large headrests were standard for the comfort of the rear-seat passengers.
The 2.8L had the same 2788cc 170hp engine as the 2800 and the Bavaria. Disc brakes on all wheels were standard. You could get either a 4-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic
transmission. The 3.0Li had the same 180hp engine as the popular 3.0Si, while the 3.3Li had a 190hp engine. All models had top speeds of 200+ kph. The L models had twin Zenith carburetors, while the Li versions added
Bosch L-Jetronic fuel-injection systems.
Assault on Mercedes
The long wheelbase sedans were some of the first BMW's in modern times to challenge Mercedes. Here's how they did it:

In order to compete with Mercedes, the BMW's had to be perceived as safe vehicles. This early crash test picture demonstrates that performance cars are also
safe cars. Notice that the picture shows the car before the crash. |
