Works was created by John Cooper before his death late last year.

"My father was very proud that BMW chose to apply the Cooper name to the performance versions of the new MINI, but at the same time, he was determined to carry on providing special tuning parts to the classic Mini. His involvement with BMW's development of the new MINI from the beginning of the project fuelled his interest in providing engine conversion kits for the new car."

Michael Cooper, Chairman of John Cooper Works

Cooper

The John Cooper Works (JCW) engine conversion comes with the approval of BMW. The JCW relationship with BMW enables buyers to order JCW conversion kits through BMW dealers.

You can get a replacement high-compression gas-flowed cylinder head, new free-flow intake and exhaust systems, and changes to the engine-management system.

These modifications push the MINI Cooper's power output up to 132 hp (from the standard car's 115 hp). Torque goes up to 119 lb ft at 5000 rpm from 108 lb ft at 4500 rpm. The 0-60 mph acceleration time goes down to 8.7 seconds while fuel consumption remains unchanged at 42.2 mpg.

On the outside, the JCW MINI has a different stainless steel exhaust tailpipe, special badges and trim, including a numbered plate on the engine bay. You also get a deeper exhaust tone, thanks to better breathing. JCW is also offering its own suspension, clutch and brake upgrades, alloy wheels, bodykits and styling accessories.

MINI

Once the MINI Cooper S is launched in the Spring of 2002, JCW will offer its own tuned version with around 200 bhp.
