The most powerful 5-series sedan has a naturally aspirated five-liter V10 engine producing 500 hp and a seven-speed SMG gearbox. Zero to 100 kmh is accomplished in under five seconds.

Compared to the normal 5-Series, the new M5 is more aggressive in appearance, thanks to subtle yet effective design modifications.

A small rear spoiler, large alloy wheels and the M5's trademark four-pipe exhaust system compliment the rear end design, signifying that this is once again the king of sport sedans.

Besides the engine developments, Formula 1 technology is carried over to the seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox – another first for BMW.

The next-generation M5 is expected to make its way into European showrooms by autumn of this year, with North America to follow soon after. More...

Appearance

Exterior changes from the normal 5-Series include a lowered stance, different front and rear air dams, altered side sills, side air vents and exclusive wheel designs (8½" front and 9½" rear), and you won’t miss the four tailpipes.

The BMW Concept M5 is based on the 5 Series sedan launched in 2003. Both cars feature an aluminum chassis and lightweight aluminum front body panels. Visually, the BMW Concept M5 stands apart from its ‘standard’ 5 Series model by the addition of modified front and rear air dams -- similar in appearance to the E46 BMW M3 -- side sills, side air vents and four exhaust tailpipes. Additionally, it has M alloy wheels of an exclusive design measuring 8.5J x 19 on the front and 9.5J x 19 on the rear, with 255 / 40 ZR 19 and 285 / 35 ZR 19 tires respectively.

The concept M5, which has been finished in a delicious shade of pewter, has received a few appearance upgrades to help it stand out from its inline-6 and V8 powered siblings. Modest but eye-catching, a deep, flowing mesh-backed front valance has been installed. The more muscular front end flows up through the grille before integrating smoothly into the car's nose. Side and rear skirts are also added.

The car adds front-fender vents and a number of subtle styling touches to the 5-series sedan that went on sale late last year, but the massive disc brakes filling its lightweight custom wheels were a more obvious sign of BMW's intent to build the world's fastest midsize sedan.

The car hasn’t been subjected to full performance testing, but it’s regarded as being likely to do the 0-62mph sprint in "well under five seconds", with 124mph coming up in 13 seconds. Sharing the lightweight front-end construction of the latest 5-Series and 6-Series, the Concept M5 shows up particularly well in power-to-weight calculations.
