What makes an "M" car?
- For starters, 30 years of
experience building the ultimate performance machines.
- Yes, they are
fast - with 330 hp and 255 ft/lbs of torque in the new M3 - but they corner and stop like high performance cars, too.
- Add in the intangibles like the four
polished stainless-steel exhausts, the power dome on the aluminum hood, and, of course, the understated
///M logo on the rear deck lid.
"If you look at our motor, there are few sports-car engines in the world that offer 100 or more
horsepower per liter, in a naturally-aspirated engine, and that's what the M3 delivers. And the car's going to redline at 8000 rpm, and it's going to produce, we're estimating, 330 horsepower at 7,900 rpm. This is not something that you read about every day in the magazines. So I'm very happy with the number - 330 horsepower - and I'm looking forward to our continued progression as we've had over the last ten years from E30 to E36 to E46."
Tom
Salkowsky, M Brand Manager, BMW North America
quoted in the Roundel, August 2000
You can only do BMW M with enthusiasm and dedication or you
don't do it at all. What we are after is perfection at the highest level. Team spirit and the drive to be right up at the front fires our staff to
achieve outstanding feats ... BMW M stands for thrills, dedication and passion, but also for rational values. It personifies high performance and perfection. It is individual in its appeal and is
characterized by proven technical substance.
Adolf P. Prommesberger
Chairman of the Management of BMW M

The M3 has been developed to
ultra high-performance standards by BMW Motorsports, the Munich-based subsidiary of BMW.
Based on the newest generation BMW 3 Series coupe, known internally as E46, the M3 begins with an even
more rigid body structure than it's predecessor, a car which in
race trim won the Sports Car GT racing championship 3 years in a row.
