Satellite Navigation
|
The
first satellite-based navigation tests were conducted in 1964. Today,
satellites of the US Global Positioning System (GPS) circle the globe
on several orbital levels at an altitude of 20,000 km. These
satellites transmit radio signals that enable a position to be defined
within an accuracy of at least 100 meters.
BMW has
been involved in conceptualizing and developing a high-performance
user-friendly navigation system that will assist in reducing
driver-strain and thus enhance road safety.
 |
The real breakthrough came with the advancement of monitor
technology and micro-electronics. The CARIN Navigation System,
for example, uses a color monitor based on liquid crystal
technology (LCD) which, in contrast to the bulky cathode ray
tubes previously used, can be integrated easily and elegantly
into the vehicle interior. |
In the
early 90s, BMW began to map Germany’s road network. By 1994 the first
factory-fitted navigation system rolled off the BMW production line.
BMW’s
Satellite Navigation system is one of the most advanced systems in the
world, and it remains the only functional system of its kind available
in many markets around the world.
How
it Works
The BMW
On-board Navigation System utilizes voice messages and optical aids to
guide you to pre-selected destinations. With the latest On-board
Monitor and Compact Disc containing digital mapping technology and
data, you select a destination from listed entries, or directly from
mapped destinations on the screen.
The
system selects and monitors a route by determining the current
location of your BMW through multi-point navigation, map-matching and
satellite navigation, also known as Global Positioning (GPS).
 |
If you vary from the pre-determined course, the system will
modify the route and guide you to your destination accordingly.
Another feature of this intelligent system is the selection of
individual preferences: you can, for example, choose to take
secondary roads instead of highways. |
The CD
contains up-to-date information on places of interest, shopping
centers, police stations, airports, major hotels and, of course,
BMW Dealerships.
Current
systems use at least a 16:9 aspect ratio full color monitor. This
system combines the navigation functions with the On-Board Monitor
display, already a standard feature on the BMW 7 Series and a
factory-installed option on all BMW X5, 5, 3 Series and Compact
models.
On some
systems, the driver selects a destination by typing the town or city
and street address, using a predictive typing system. The driver also
has the option of selecting popular destinations such as shopping
centers, hospitals, hotels, recreational areas and service stations
from an on-screen menu. The driver can also compile a list of up to 50
frequently visited destinations.
