The 3 Series Compact is youthful and fresh, powerful and athletic, sophisticated and elegant. The striking front and rear ends of the body, 28 cm or 11" shorter than on the sedan, give the 3

Design Features |
The new Compact benefits from many of the developments introduced on the new 3 Series models.
Sharing the same suspension as the 3 Series and the same rear wheel drive technology, the Compact features a re-tuned chassis that offers superb handling.
The safety system is available with up to 8 airbags, with front, side and head airbags in the front, and two side airbags for the rear seats.
The Compact retains the distinctively short overhangs of the previous model yet benefits from an entirely new look front and rear. New lights front and rear and more strongly
defined styling lines give the Compact its own clear identity.
In the interior, access to the rear seats has been improved, and the choice of colors has been expanded, for both interior and exterior. Four new exterior colors and seven new cloth
or leather interior trims are available on the new 316i Compact.

Performance |
The new 1.9
liter four cylinder engine produces more power, torque and improved fuel economy.

Although power output is increased by 3 bhp to 105 bhp @ 5300 rpm, the real emphasis is on flexibility and torque. The maximum torque has been increased by 10 per cent to 165 Nm or
122 lb-ft. Significantly, this 'pulling power' is achieved at a low 2500 rpm compared with the former engine's 3900 rpm.
The result is a higher top speed of 119 mph, faster acceleration from 0-62 mph of 11.9 secs and fourth gear acceleration from 50-75 mph of 11.4 secs.
Fuel economy is 40.9 mpg (6.9
liters/100 km) in the combined EU cycle, and the 316i Compact meets year 2000 EU3 emissions regulations.
