Wong Kar-Wai was born in Shanghai and grew up in Hong Kong. He studied graphic design at Hong Kong Polytechnic, which led to his passion for photography and film. His highly innovative movies often feature his scriptwriting talent as well. In fact, his screenplay for the movie The Final Victory helped launch his film career as a director. In Wong’s films, the role of strong emotions helps him reach audiences through their hearts as well as their eyes and ears.
Wong Kar-Wai won the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his 1997 film Happy Together, a film shot mostly in Argentina.
