Guy Ritchie was born in England and began his directing career with work on music videos in Germany.
In 1995, he wrote and directed a short, The Hard Case, which he shopped around the film industry to gain financing for his first film, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. That film scored at the box office and won numerous honors from around the world.
Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels had help from Sting (who appears in the film, and whose wife Trudie Styler is a Lock, Stock executive producer) and Tom Cruise (whose early enthusiasm helped the film land a U.S. distributor).
His next film, Snatch, starring Brad Pitt, has brought him
more acclaim and success. Another east London gangster movie, Snatch
also features British stars Vinnie Jones and Mike Reid.
Ritchie
recently filmed The Mole, where his wife Madonna plays an American girl who comes to England and gets involved in an underworld battle to find a police informer.
In his feature films, Ritchie has created authentic characters by casting fresh, young actors and non-actor acquaintances alongside experienced actors.
