John Frankenheimer Dies.

July 6, 2002. Filmmaker John Frankenheimer--known for taut political thrillers like the classic The Manchurian Candidate, as well as a string of Emmy-winning TV work--died of a stroke Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 70.

The stroke was a complication from recent spinal surgery. The veteran director, whose career spanned nearly five decades, had checked into L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in May for a back operation. He had been discharged but suffered blood clots and was recently readmitted to the hospital.

as reported by E!Online.

Ambush

On a dark freeway, a van swerves close and the door slides open. From inside, masked gunmen threaten to fire unless The Driver stops and surrenders his passenger, a seemingly harmless man they accuse of smuggling diamonds. It’s a simple choice: do or die. Director John Frankenheimer and star Clive Owen combine talents to create a dramatic chase with some unexpected twists.

John Frankenheimer’s directing career spans five decades, taking him from making films for the Air Force’s Motion Picture Squadron to live television shows, movies, made-for-television features, and now to digital films created for the Internet.

Along the way, Frankenheimer has earned many Emmy awards and Oscar nominations. He also has directed the acting world’s greatest, from Frank Sinatra, Debra Kerr, and Burt Lancaster to Robert DeNiro, Warren Beatty, Gary Sinise, and Ben Affleck, to name a few.

He has relentlessly striven for realism in his work, helping him become a master at creating tension. John Frankenheimer’s mastery of both film and television directing makes him unique among the directors in The Hire Film Series. It’s as if he spent 50 years preparing himself to introduce the world to the power of digital films. Also, his 1998 movie, Ronin, was one of the inspirations for the creation of this series.
