An autostrada is generally
a toll-road with two lanes in each direction, narrow or nonexistent emergency lanes,
high speeds, and lots of curves.
Many roads were once national highways converted to autostradas by laying another two-lane road
alongside of it. Large stretches of autostrada are two two-lane highways separated by a guardrail. Often, the guardrail is less than 18 inches from the driving lane.
